Recover after surgery
Your recovery journey is critical to the outcome of your surgery. Explore our tips for healing and find out how we will support you on your recovery journey.

Recovery is more than a pause in activity
Allowing your body the opportunity to heal from surgical procedures assists with recovery, which is critical to ensure the best possible surgical results. It is important to understand that while you rest, your body will be working hard, and your decisions during this time are critical to not only promoting healing but also reducing the risk of complications.
Recovery time will vary based on your surgery, health and your commitment to post-surgical care. It is also the time we will closely monitor for any early signs of post-operative complications.
Tips for recovery
While recovery will vary from patient to patient, our team recommends considering the following for a smooth recovery journey.
Our team have spent years guiding patients through their recovery and will work with you to outline a tailored recovery plan that suits your unique needs. This will include comprehensive support for wound care, medication use, follow-up schedules and milestones for your return to exercise and movement.
We ask that you follow our recommendations closely, and feel welcome to get in touch with our team for any further clarity you may require.
Your body is your priority, particularly during your initial recovery, so ensuring you have adequate support to allow yourself time to relax is critical. Sleep is also incredibly important, so ensure you are set up for success prior to undertaking your surgery. Consider where you will rest, and how you will reduce your stress so you can focus on healing.
During your initial recovery period, our team will also guide you on any movement restrictions. We recommend you avoid any strenuous activity that may put added strain on your body, such as vigorous exercise or heavy lifting.
How you fuel your body during this period can influence how effectively you recover. We recommend considering a balanced diet that includes
- Plenty of water, as recommended by Dr Mark Lee
- Protein, such as lean meats, fish, eggs and legumes, to support wound healing and optimal immune function
- A variety of vitamins, minerals and antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables
- Avoidance of alcohol and nicotine. It is advisable to stop smoking at least six weeks prior to surgery and avoid alcohol during the recovery period in order to reduce the risk of complications after plastic surgery.
It’s also important to understand that direct sunlight can cause pigmentation changes in newly formed scar tissue, potentially darkening scars and prolonging the healing process. Protect your scars from the sun by wearing protective clothing or applying high-SPF sunscreen.
Some over-the-counter drugs and supplements can increase bleeding, interfere with anaesthesia, or negatively interact with prescribed postoperative medications. It is crucial to inform Dr Mark about all medications and supplements you are taking and check in with the team if you have any changes following surgery.
Our team will share comprehensive techniques to support your wound care following surgery, including guidance on what to apply to the wound and how to massage your scars to promote healing.
